What this means is that the entire bird house is boxed up with four walls, a roof and an opening entrance that is just nice for the nesting bird to get in and out of the bird house. The opening entrance is usually located in the middle of the front face of the bird house to protect the birds inside from the weather and from any predators. Be careful not to choose bird house designs that have a wooden perch at the front of the bird house entrance because it will facilitate predators from using that perch to get to the birds inside the bird house.
The boxed birdhouse design also has the capability to be opened from the top, front, side or bottom. However the birdhouse designs that can be opened from the top or the front gives you the easiest access to the interior of the birdhouses. Moreover, if you open the birdhouses from the top, you minimize the risk of disturbing any nesting birds inside your cute birdhouses. In addition to that, you can also easily clean the birdhouses and monitor the birdhouses in this way.
The boxed birdhouse designs can come in single compartment birdhouses or multi-compartment birdhouses. Some species of birds such as the Eastern Bluebird and the Chickadee only can nest in single compartment birdhouses. On the other hand, the multi-compartment birdhouses are just like high-rise apartment blocks. A big birdhouse is separated into many different units and each bird can select their own unit. Species like Purple Martins are very comfortable nesting in multi-compartment birdhouses.
