If it is an outdoor bird house, you will need to drill some kind of hole or saw some opening in your bird house. Just like a human who needs lots of fresh air and water, so does birds. In the summer, temperatures can be scorching. I’m sure some of you will hide under shelters to keep out from the sun. Similarly, the a functional bird house is the same way. Birds which visits your unique decorative bird house will want to find shelter away from the hot sun. So do give your bird houses plenty of ventilation.

Fifth, if you are starting to buy bird house, no matter if its decorative art bird houses or is an elaborate victorian bird house, you need to ensure only the proper material is used. Bird houses especially wild bird houses should be made from thicker materials so that it traps heat and in result of it, insulates the small baby birds from coldness. The bird house should be made of a non-toxic material so it does not harm the birds. Painted bird houses or stained bird houses are ok just as long as they are not painted or stained on the inside. Metal bird houses are a big no no. Can you imagine staying in a metal box under the hot sun ? Aluminium bird houses are ok such as the purple martin bird houses. Purple martin bird house is one such bird house that is suitable for birds although its made of metal.
Lastly, one of the important factors when you buy bird house is that there should not be a perch in front of the bird house. Birds do not use this perch to get into your bird house contrary to common belief. Rather then aiding the bird to get into the bird house, other predators may decide to use the perch to wait for the birds in your bird house and attack them. Rather then building this perch, make sure your roof of the bird house extends over the entrance hole so as to prevent rain from getting into your bird house.
